To successfully broadcast the right message, one must guide the discussion, rather than waiting to react to someone else's spin. Media relations are an essential part of this work, identifying and working to inform the right journalists. I have extensive experience working with the media, including issuing and following up press releases, and informing journalists about complicated topics like climate change, which often means knowing the right experts to answer detailed questions. I mainly work to get management and colleagues quoted in the press, although I can also be the one to step in as spokesperson. I have organized numerous press conferences, often serving as moderator, for different topics ranging from report launches to legislative proposals. I prepared talking points for our organization, member organizations and affiliates. In addition, I have ghost written and placed Op-Eds and letters to the editor, as well as blog entries. While working in London at a sustainable transportation non-profit, I was interviewed by the BBC and quoted in newspaper articles.

As a result, on my watch as Communications Manager, my organisation received hundreds of media hits in major international news publications and news wires, including the Associated Press (AP), Agence France Press (AFP), Al Jazeera, Reuters, the Guardian, Climate Wire and Point Carbon, to name a few.

"By putting a price on carbon we can make sure that those that are creating the pollution will, in fact, have to pay for it." I saw articles published in EU-focused media like the European Voice (left) and ENDS Europe as well as leading national media outlets such as Le Monde (France), Mother Jones (U.S.) and the Irish Times.

"These negotiations can be seen as the place where communications, science and politics meet."
- Vanessa Bulkacz, AFP, September 26, 2013
I also worked on the other side of the table as a freelance journalist, before working in communications, which helps me know what journalists need to write a good story. I was published in a variety of publications covering topics from the environment, politics and faith to travel stories and features on music and the arts. Publications included the Prague Post, the SF Weekly, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA, where I served as London Correspondent), the Czech Business Weekly, Prague Leaders (Club) Magazine and Bratislava Business Leaders Magazine. Here are some links to selected articles I authored for these publications.
